“We know there were many people, some who risked their own lives, who saved the lives of others on Tuesday morning,” Senior Constable Parker said.
“There is one fellow who used wheelie bins to rescue people from the flats in Brown Street, but I believe there are many more we don’t know about.
“We would like to nominate them for a bravery award through the NSW Police Service.
“Unfortunately three people lost their lives but I’m sure this number could have been much higher if it wasn’t for these selfless people.”
Senior Constable Hanna said many of these people will not want to be in the limelight, but he felt they should be recognised.
“Each command has local community awards but they are usually presented in Raymond Terrace,” he said.
“But we want to have one here in Dungog for those who risked their own lives to save others,” he said.
“We would like members of the community to write to us or the Dungog Chronicle and tell us the name of the heroic person who saved either their or someone else’s life.
“Please give a brief synopsis of what happened and a contact phone number if we need more information.”
The letters can be sent to Dungog Police, PO Box 19, Dungog NSW 2420 or emailed to the Dungog Chronicle at janelle.oneill@fairfaxmedia.com.au
