Train 4 School is a free eight session community program which runs throughout the year before your child starts school.
It is being organised by Dungog Shire Community Centre manager Sarah U’Brien and project support officer Ali Martin.
Ms Martin said the program is not to replace the kinder orientation sessions run by the schools in the shire, but to complement it.
“The schools have great orientation sessions but this is all about preparing your child for school life emotionally, physically, socially and academically,” she said.
“There is a lot of do to get a child ready for school and it’s not just being able to write their own name.
“It’s about emotional maturity. We can teach both parents and children skills so they are in a better place to learn.
“There will be resources and services such as speech pathology and occupational therapy available as well.
“It will be based on informal group discussion, input from professionals and fun learning for the little ones.”
The courses will be held on a Thursday morning and parents or caregivers are welcome to bring their children along.
The first course will be held in the Dungog Public School hall from 10.30am to 12 noon on Thursday, April 23.
There is no cost for the course and morning tea will be provided.
