Jane Baker, Michael Gardiner, Stephen Orr and Tom Chen are Team Dungog who will trek and run through 100 kilometres of Sydney’s rugged Ku-ring-ai and Garigal National Parks walking trails.
The fundraiser supports Soldier On and Mates 4 Mates who provide support for both psychologically and physically wounded, injured or ill current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force personnel and their families.
The challenge commences at St Ives Showground at 7am on April 25 and finishes at the Manly Warringah War Memorial Park at Manly Dam.
They each have 24 hours to complete the challenge but they are hoping to do it in 17.
“We needed to have four in the team so Stephen and I asked around and Michael and Tom said they would love to do it,” Jane said.
“Mick is completing an ironman event in Melbourne on March 22 so he is already in training.
“Tom has led 10 treks on the Kokoda Trail and thought this would be a good challenge.”
Jane’s partner Stephen said it seemed very appropriate to complete the 100km on the centenary of Anzac Day.
“There is an epidemic of post traumatic stress disorder amongst our war veterans and this is a wonderful way to help those men and women who have and are still fighting for our country.”
There are three separate legs to the challenge and a number of locals are heading down with the team to provide support, food, clothes and encouragement.
“We have to raise $2000 a team as well as $295 each to enter,” Jane said.
“We are each paying our own entry fee but we have a number of fundraisers happening to cover the $2000.
“People can also donate online at www.soldieron.org.au/teamdungog or www.mates4mates.org/teamdungog
The group is holding a trivia night fundraiser at Dungog RSL Club on Saturday night, April 11.
There is also a lolly guessing competition jar at Dungog Council as well as 100 club, silent auction and coin toss on the trivia night.
