The Holden Scramble is a Pro Amateur Club teams’ event which is managed by the PGA of Australia.

Chris Martin and John Shelton won at local level before moving onto the regional final.

Each team at the regional final teams up with a PGA club professional with the winners progressing to the Holden Scramble championship final at Twin Waters Golf Club on the Sunshine Coast.

Chris and John teamed up with three players from Charlestown Golf Club – Bradley McLennan, Justin Bunt - and resident pro Ryan Smith.

The boys headed to Brisbane on December 5 and upon arrival had a practise round where they finished at 11 under.

“The second day was the first round of the competition and we finished this round at 10 under and felt pretty good,” John said.

“But that was short-lived as one of the local teams had shot an impressive 16 under and were looking hard to catch.

“On the third day we played well to finish with a 9 under and the leaders hadn’t done so well, so we had a nervous wait to see if we had made the cut.

“The top teams were moving into the final round with each to team up with a touring professional.

“The cards were in and we made it through to 10th place and were teamed up with Marcus Cain from Queensland.”

The boys teed off and were looking for a strong finish and hopefully move up the winners’ board, but this wasn’t to be with a thunderstorm and heavy rain suspending play for the day.

“At 3.30 that afternoon the call was made to call it off and the winners would come from the day before which put us in 10th place, 5 shots off the lead and round 1 shot off third,” John said.

“Thank you to everyone who supported us in the lead-up to the competition and phone calls and messages that came through while we were playing.

“It made us feel proud to be a part of a great local community.”
