A low-cost short-term visitor accommodation feasibility study for the Dungog Shire was carried out earlier this year and was on display last month.
Dungog Council’s economic development and tourism coordinator Ivan Skaines said there were six submissions with three of the comments suggesting the upgrading of existing facilities in the town.
“These included the Frank Robinson Reserve and Dungog Showground,” Mr Skaines said.
“There are two options for Frank Robinson which include a primitive camping ground or a roadside rest area.
“However current regulations mean only two camp sites would be available at the 1.05ha site if it was turned into a primitive camping ground.”
Councillor Nancy Knudsen said it would make a good rest area.
“I really can’t see too many downsides and with more people about, there would be less vandalism out there,” she said.
“They can have two options – the showground with a dump point or down near the river where the view is magnificent.”
Council will investigate the business case of classifying the reserve as a roadside rest area for self-contained RVs and caravans.
