The mother of two, who threw herself in the Dungog Junior Rugby League Club’s secretarial position when no-one else would take it on, said she was “blown away” when the announcement was made.
Lindy and Scott Fisher were recognised by the
Aurizon Volunteer Program earlier in the year for their contribution as individuals for donating their time and effort to junior rugby league .
The program is open to any person currently associated with junior rugby league in the Newcastle and Upper Hunter Competitions, in a non-paid capacity for a club in a registered competition.
Nominees were judged on their contribution to rugby league, commitment to the club, innovation and leadership, demonstration of community participation and ability to meet a junior sport need.
“My sons Broc and Jarod had been playing for quite a few years and I always went along and helped, but wasn’t on the committee.
“I think they thought I would be a good secretary.”
And they weren’t wrong as Lindy sourced nearly $50,000 worth of grant money for the club.
She got Wayne Bennett to come to three training afternoons with the players, got him up for a night at the club where he was guest speaker and was instrumental in setting up the Alex McKinnon fundraiser which raised $22,500 for the injured Knight.
The club has received $1000 and Lindy a framed, signed jersey from Knight’s player James McManus.
“I was very much on a high on Thursday night, but on Friday morning driving home from Raymond Terrace, I got very emotional.
“It’s not just me, it’s everyone who helps. Club members, my employer Robyn Kennedy and my family who help me out when I go away for meetings.
“I couldn’t have done this on my own, it’s the help I receive that enables me to do it.”
Kate and Scott Fisher, Lennie Argent and Brett Gordon and Lindy and her sister Sandra McMullen attended the presentation night.
Lindy also presented the $22,500 cheque to the Alex McKinnon Foundation.
Junior league committee member James Lovegrove said Lindy and Scott were two of the eight finalists.
“Lindy’s win is a fantastic effort from a hard working, passionate and dedicated person who puts in an enormous amount of effort for our club,” James said.
