The brigade received a 2014 NRMA Insurance community grant which they used to check and maintain all of the hydrants in the Clarence Town area and marking hydrants on the roadway using cat's eye blue reflectors.
Brigade captain Shaun Cox said this will ensure the brigade is able to quickly locate a water source at night and during bad weather.
“Around 20 members of the brigade installed 126 blue cat’s eyes and 140 hydrants were serviced,” Mr Cox said.
“All up it was around 300 man hours to do it.
“The $3500 grant covered the cost of the cat’s eyes which are placed in the middle of the road adjacent to each fire hydrant.
“Fires always seem to occur on cold, drizzly, foggy nights so this will enable members to easily see where the closest hydrants are.”
NRMA Insurance community and sustainability operations manager Lee McDougall said said every day, in every community, people dedicate their time and energy to making their community safer, more sustainable and better prepared to respond to emergencies and natural disasters.
“The community grants program was designed to support this,” Ms McDougall said.
“We have had a fantastic response this year from community groups and were impressed with the great work Clarence Town Rural Fire Brigade are doing.
“We are excited to see how the community grant will support their project and the Clarence Town community.”
