By the time night comes along they will create a magical effect, glowing as an LED light gleams from within.
Volunteers and students from Dungog High School made the lanterns last weekend and through the week.
Made from cane and covered with glue-soaked tissue paper, there were a variety of designs from turtles to teapots and everything in between.
The students carried theirs down from the high school on Thursday afternoon and helped to hang them from shop awnings in readiness for the Long Table Dinner.
