A recent inspection identified the timber support posts are rotted where embedded in the ground.
Council’s manager of infrastructure and assets Steve Hitchens said the structure relies on the integrity of the posts for lateral support and uplift in the event of wind.
“The support posts are buried directly into the ground and are visibly rotten at ground surface level and present a risk of the structure falling over in adverse weather conditions,” he said.
The current shelter will be demolished and replaced with a new structure including the concrete base as the current concrete slab is built following the existing ground slope.
It will include new aluminium tables and chairs and the current hip roof which will be replaced with a gable roof.
Cost of the replacement will be $23,000.
