An ambulance spokesman said a boating event was being held on the river with competitors from away in attendance.
“At the end of the event a 12-year-old girl from Taree was swinging from a rope tied to a tree over the river,” he said.
“She has swung out over the water but let go too early and landed on a piece of timber submerged in the river.
“She was rescued by other competitors and lifted onto the lower flat board at the rear of the ski boat and taken out of the water when paramedics arrived.
“She sustained soft tissue damage in her legs and was taken to Maitland Hospital in a stable condition.”
There was miss-communication between emergency services with Clarence Town Rural Fire Service in attendance as well as three police vehicles and the rescue helicopter.
