Ian, blinded by a shooting incident nine years ago, will be accompanied by eight mates...“providing they can all make it”.
He hopes to raise $10,000 and intends to split it evenly between Adalyn’s family and the J1 Children’s Oncology Ward at John Hunter Hospital.
“Adalyn is currently undergoing chemotherapy for a tumour, has no immune system, and has low white blood levels,” Ian said.
“The family has four other children and Adalyn’s mum had to leave her job to look after her and her dad is currently on leave without pay to manage the rest of the family.
“They live in the Tenambit area and travel to John Hunter Hospital several times each week for treatment and associated appointments,” Ian said.
He hoped the money raised through the walk would help alleviate some of the financial strain the family was currently experiencing.
Ian plans to leave Clarence Town at 7am and covering around one kilometre every 10 minutes should arrive at the Royal Hotel Dungog about 1.30pm. A sausage sizzle and raffles are planned to complement the fund-raising walk.
Normally Ian would have his guide dog Jesse with him when he is out and about but for this walk he will use his cane and his mates’ ‘guiding eyes’.
“I think it’s too far for Jesse on a hot day and the road and gravel too rough,” Ian said.
Ian’s walk was made a few kilometres longer when advised by police he could not walk the Clarence Town Road because it was too dangerous with hills, blind corners and areas where he could not get off the road. This meant he had to walk via Alison.
“We will have two cars, one in front and one in back, when I am walking and we will be wearing reflective vests.”
If you would like to contribute to Ian’s fund-raising effort, simply call in or contact the Commonwealth Bank, Dungog, and tell them you want to donate... And get along to the Royal Hotel after 2pm for the sausage sizzle and raffles.
