Could Wollongong's Flagstaff Hill become known as the eighth wonder of the world?
The Illawarra landmark is up against global icons such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Yellowstone National Park, Niagara Falls and Stonehenge to claim the title of 8th Wonder of the World on travel research website VirtualTourist.
With votes closing on September 30, Destination Wollongong is encouraging Illawarra residents to log on to the site and give Flagstaff Hill their vote.
"The competition is another opportunity to put Wollongong on a global platform next to iconic landmarks such as Mount Rushmore and the Hollywood sign," Destination Wollongong general manager Mark Sleigh said.
"The exposure Wollongong is receiving among international travellers just by being listed next to these landmarks is of significant value to our destination's image."
Flagstaff Hill's nomination comes on the back of Wollongong's success in securing the inaugural Social Media Tourism Symposium via a Facebook vote-off earlier this year.
Mr Sleigh said it was an example of local pride that he hoped would be repeated in the VirtualTourist promotion.
