Read my lying lips: Abbott

TONY ABBOTT has told voters not to believe everything he says.

In an extraordinary admission last night, the Opposition Leader said his only utterances that should be regarded as ''gospel truth'' were carefully prepared and scripted remarks such as those made during speeches or policy pronouncements.

Otherwise, he indicated that statements he made during the ''heat of discussion'' such as radio interviews or under questioning at press conferences, were not necessarily reliable.

''I know politicians are going to be judged on everything they say but sometimes in the heat of discussion you go a little bit further than you would if it was an absolutely calm, considered, prepared, scripted remark,'' he said.

''Which is one of the reasons why the statements that need to be taken absolutely as gospel truth [are] those carefully prepared, scripted remarks.

''Most of us know when we're talking to people, or listening to people, when we can put absolute weight on what's being said and when it's the give and take of standard conversation.''

The admission, seized on by the Rudd government as a sign that nothing Mr Abbott says can be trusted, came during an interview on the ABC's 7.30 Report.

Mr Abbott had been asked to reconcile the promise he made during a radio interview in February that there would be no new or increased taxes under a Coalition government with his announcement a month later that the Coalition would lift company taxes by 1.7 per cent to fund a $2.7 billion paid parental leave scheme. He said the original promise was made in the heat of discussion.

''Some people will judge me harshly, I accept that. I understand that some of them will say 'Aha, he said this in a radio interview in February and then a month later … he made a commitment to paid parental leave which is not completely consistent with that first statement.

''All of us when we're in the heat of verbal combat, so to speak, will sometimes say things that will go a little bit further.''

Mr Abbott was asked about other pledges, such as the promise to reintroduce Australian Workplace Agreements but with the Rudd government's safety net of terms and conditions.

''That is a very considered position,'' Mr Abbott assured.

The government, which is languishing in the polls, was quick to pounce last night. ''Mr Abbott has now confirmed you cannot trust what he says because some things are real and some things are not real,'' a spokesman for the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, said.

''There are two Tony Abbotts - and you'll never know which Tony Abbott is talking, even in Parliament - the scripted Tony, or the Tony Abbott swept away by the heat of discussion.''

The interview was a hot topic on Twitter, with comments such as: ''Well that was car crash television at its best''.

One theory I have is that whatever Tony Abbott says now, can be justifibly (if heaven help us he gets elected as Prime Minister) renegued by him after, because what he said before the election may have been said in the heat of the moment and we were silly to take what he said as what he truely meant.

Finally Tony Abbott admit what everyone has known already. He has no policies and makes up as he goes. The Libs would have been better off sticking to Malcolm Turnbull who you could at least trust.

For of you apologists who think it's ok to support this lying little mad monk person.... You better be a employer of some sort because if he is elected (GOD help us) then all salaried people can kiss their job security goodbye.

How can any thinking person believe anything this snake says. Blocking everything that goes to the senate does nothing for the future of Australia, god help our grandchildren.

Read my lips! Mr Abbott you are an embracement to the Liberal Party and Australians in general, your ability to continually lie and to make excuses for lying is beyond belief. I can not and will not vote for the Liberal Party while you are at the helm; there is no room in Australian politics for a self confessed “Bull**it Artist”. Tony get on your bike, Australians deserve better than you are capable of giving.

we want them to say it, but when they do it's still alittle uncomfortable and a bit `he didnt just, oh yes he did'. telling the truth always comes across better in a Robin Williams film (and that's pretty bad)

Tony Abbott showed long ago that he can't be trusted in regard to anything he says. The classic was his "non recall" of his meeting with Cardinal Pell during an ABC Lateline interview during the 2004 election campaign. The transcript of the interview is at http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/co ntent/2004/s1210843.htm If you read this you can only conclude that Abbott hasan extraordinarily bad short term memory or just outright lied. Either way, politics aside, he not a fit person to lead the country.
