State beckons for young swimmers

25 Mar, 2009 04:00 AM
Two students from Dungog Public School have qualified for the State swimming championships at Homebush next month.

While the trip will be a first for Brodie Henderson, it will be the second time for Ben Peper.

Both boys will be swimming in the 50 metre freestyle event on April 8 – Ben in the under 9s age group and Brodie in the under 8s.

Ben is hoping to make an impression this year, having a personal best at the regional carnival held a few weeks ago.

“Last year I swam the same race in 41 seconds, but have improved to a 37 this year,” he said.

Brodie is thrilled at his selection and while he has been swimming since he was four, this is his first competitive selection.

“I haven’t been old enough in past years to compete at zone, but this year I even made it to region,” the seven-year-old said.

“Mum (Belinda) and Dad (Dave) were very proud of me and will be even more proud if I make it to the nationals.”

Both boys are doing squad training with Peter Maytom at Dungog pool in the lead up to the event.
