Dungog Schoolboys Rugby League

01 Apr, 2009 04:00 AM
Well it has all started again for another season and the schoolboys have currently seven teams registered in this year’s competition.

We have an under 6 team, but the team requires a couple of more players should they wish to continue. We have an under 8s (combination of seven and eight year olds), an under 9s team which also requires a couple of more players or they will be required to combine with the 10s and the remaining teams are the 11s, 12s and 13s.

It was unfortunate that we were unable to field an under 15s and 17s sides this year but we lost too many players during the off season.

Last weekend results show some promise and we should hopefully have another successful season this year.

Under 6s were to play West Wallsend – forfeited

Under 8s had a bye

Under 9s had a bye

Under 10s played Western Suburbs – lost 34-0

Under 11s played Morpeth – lost 38-0

The result does not indicate the effort that the boys put in for their first game.

It took 12 minutes before Morpeth were able to cross our try line and up to that stage, it was our team that did most of the attack.

There were one or two chances when we went close to scoring tries but unfortunately we got caught just short of the line. Morpeth than ran in three converted tries, the last being on the half time bell.

Second half started badly for the boys as we dropped the ball inside our 20 metres and Morpeth scored inside two tackles. The team did not see much ball after that as Morpeth played mistake free football and went on to score another four tries (three in the last 5 minutes) to run out convincing winners.

Our boys did not stop trying and got tired in the latter stages due to the amount of tackling they were required to do.

Man of the match points went to: 3 points went to two players, Jacob Long for his strong running and sturdy defence and Sam Salter, his first game of league and was equal top tackler, both played very strong games. 1 point also went to two players, Joel Smith, made many good runs and Brett Eyb, who also attacked and defended strongly (equal top tackler).

Players’ player went to Sam Salter, impressed his team mates and was rewarded with the award. All the other players did well and it was good to see the boys play as a team and not individuals, well done to all.

The team will improve greatly from their first hit out for the season and the coaching staff and parents are looking forward to the next game.

Under 12s played Woodberry – lost 16-10

Dungog played Woodberry, a rematch of last year’s semi final, in their first game for the season.

The team started strongly scoring a try in the first five minutes of the game, with Royden Stevens making a strong run from 20 metres out to score in the corner. The conversion was kicked by Sebastian Munro.

The team continued to play well with another try being scored by Blade Rufo, after a long sustained bulldozing type run leaving many of the defending players on the ground behind him, the conversion was unsuccessful but this gave us a lead of 10-0 at half time.

Woodberry had a lot more ball in the second half and slowly clawed their way back to being 10 all. Then with only a matter of seconds remaining on the clock, Woodberry received a penalty ten metres out from our line, took a quick tap and scored in the corner as the final bell sounded, winning the game.

It was a shame that the score did not remain 10 all as this would have been a fair result for the game.

Our new players, Myles Boyd, Blake Studdert, and Jacob Edwards, were outstanding for their first game.

Everyone in the team played well and tried their hardest, all being happy to be back on the field.

The match points were awarded to the following players: 3 points to Blade Rufo, 2 to Myles Boyd and 1 to Drew Wardmen.

Well done to everyone and we cannot wait till next week, we know that it will be another great game.

Under 13s played South Lakes – won

I have been informed that the team won the game in convincing style but unfortunately the score is unknown. Barry Allen.
