All good things must come to an end, and after five consecutive years of making the Hunter Combined High School (CHS) softball team, Dungog High School student Samantha Simmonds has played in her last tournament for Hunter.
The CHS State Championships were played at Manly’s softball grounds at North Curl Curl last month.
Most of the Hunter girls have been playing together for three to five years in various other representative teams and know each other’s plays.
The team had seven wins and two losses from their nine games.
At the end of each tournament the CHS selectors announce a blue and red CHS state team to play at the All Schools Championships and selection trials.
“Last year I made the red team and this year I was hoping to play well enough to retain my position in the team,” Samantha said.
“When my name wasn't read out for the red team I thought I had been overlooked.
“Then the selectors announced the blue team and I was in a state of shock when my name was read out.
“Last year Hunter only had two representatives in the State teams and this year there are four.”
These two teams will now go to Sydney later in the month to play the combined Catholic and private schools in an all schools championship.
Selectors will look at all the girls and select a combined All Schools NSW State team to participate at the National All Schools Championships in May which will be held in Melbourne.
For the second year in a row Hunter also won the Jock Currie Shield which only high schools in country regions are eligible to challenge for.
