Warriors hold off late comeback

14 Jul, 2010 05:00 AM
The Dungog Warriors have held off a fast finishing Budgewoi with a 24-18 victory to move within one game of securing the minor premiership.

The victory was considered bitter sweet as the Warriors were crippled by injuries which left them with two reserves on the bench for most of the game.

Dan Foot suffered ligament and tendon damage to a finger and Fletcher Celand suffered damage to his shoulder.

Both are expected to miss several weeks with their respective injuries.

The game started well for the Warriors as they dominated the first half.

Budgewoi was their own worst enemy at times making basic errors.

On the back of three tries to Brad Johnson and one to Dave Taylor, the Warriors took what seemed to be an insurmountable 24-nil lead into the break.

Budgewoi were determined not to lie down and came out in the second half and began to claw there way back into the game.

The lack of reserves was placing an extra toll on the whole team.

Budgewoi however were relentless and drew within six with still 10 minutes on the clock.

The final 10 minutes saw both sides scramble to make plays and Dungog were eventually able to hang on for a gritty 24-18 victory.

Best for Dungog in the forwards were brothers Kieran Hinton and Brad Johnson along with Mark Johnston in his new role as prop.

In the backs it was two of the smallest men on the field in Lee Nevin and David Taylor who instrumental in the teams victory.

Players’ player was Brad Johnson and RSL best forward Kieran Hinton.

RSL best back was Lee Nevin and Ray’s reserve was Mark Johnston.

Dungog now changes their focus to Dora Creek.

Dora Creek provided Dungog with their only loss of the season to date so there will be plenty to play for against the second place team.

A win will secure the Warriors the minor premiership.

The game is 5pm this Saturday at Bennett Park.

The club is holding a karaoke night at the Bank Hotel on Saturday night after the game. Everyone is invited and kick-off will likely be around 8pm.
