Warriors dominant at home

19 May, 2010 05:00 AM
The Dungog Warriors moved to 5 - 0 on the season after defeating Budgewoi 60 - 6.

After addressing their defensive deficiencies at training, Dungog came at keen to impress their local crowd with some physical defence to start the game.

The first 10 minutes of the game saw both sides battling for field position. Eventually Dungog was able to score through a damaging 30 metre burst from Terry Drinkwater.

On the back of a penalty and an unlucky bounce Budgewoi were able to level the scores. There was no question though this was Dungog’s day as they continued to play at high level with several well structured attacking raids ending with sweeping back lines.

A feature of the warriors attack was the amount of ball movement, the bodies in motion and the support play right across the board.

On the back of sustained pressure Brad Johnson and Lee Nevin were able to cross and give Dungog a healthy lead. The next section of the game was quite remarkable as rookie Jackson Bell scored three consecutive tries to seemingly break Budgewoi’s back going into half time. The score at half time was 34 - 6.

The first 40 minutes of the match was arguably Dungog’s best of the season and after grinding it out for the first 10 in the second half, Dungog continued to pour on the tries.

Travis Crouch crossed out wide, Lee Nevin grabbed his second from dummy half, Chris Evans punched through, Dan Rumbel scored off a nice short ball and Fletcher Celand finished the scoring to leave the final score at 60 - 6.

I don’t want to throw too many superlatives out there, but this was a very complete performance from the Warriors which can only make coach Henderson happy five games into the season.

In fact Dave’s record speaks for itself as both the Warriors and the under 9s, which he also coaches, have started the season with five consecutive wins.

Best on the day for Dungog in a complete team performance were Fletcher Celand who looked natural in the 7 and formed a dangerous combination with Dave Taylor.

Lee Nevin was also impressive at the back. Chris Evans and Jackson Bell are also creating a lethal partnership down Dungog’s left edge.

In the forwards it was Dan Rumbel, Terry Drinkwater and Brad Johnson leading the way as the entire pack stood as one.

Dungog travels to Dora Creek next Saturday at 2pm to meet the second placed Dora Creek. The team is taking a bus and would encourage any supporters who wish to go down to the game to contact Luke Mellon on 0402 533 199 for details.

On June 5, the Warriors are holding a poker night at the Dungog RSL. The club would also like to invite anyone who would like to play in this event. For further details contact Jake Clifton on 0429 697 033.

Also congratulations to Kieran Hinton who played his 50th game for the Warriors on the weekend.

RSL best forward and players’ player Dan Rumbel, RSL best back Fletcher Celand and Ray’s reserve Tom Windred.
