Over the past two seasons the Dungog Warriors have set themselves a high standard in defence.
The side is given goals to try and meet each game, so when they don’t meet them goals there is cause for some disappointment.
Despite this Dungog recorded their fourth win of the season with an up and down 44 to 22 win over Gateshead.
Dungog has traditionally been a slow starter this season but on Saturday that was not the case as the Warriors crossed twice early through Chris and Lee Nevin for an early 10 nil lead.
But ill discipline from Dungog allowed Gateshead to hit straight back to narrow the gap to four points.
Shortly after Chris Evans began to try and erase memories of that horror kick from a week ago with a spectacular 70 metre solo try.
The joy was short lived as further Dungog mistakes allowed Gateshead to stay in the game and keep the score at 16 10.
Whenever Gateshead scored, Dungog seemed to be able to reply with an answer. On this occasion it was Brad Johnson scoring his seventh try of the season to give Dungog a 22 - 10 lead.
Through the week the Warriors have discussed being ruthless when developing leads, but for the third time in the half they let Gateshead in for another try.
However Dungog responded through Chris Evans who helped give them a 26 - 16 half time lead.
After what was described as the sides worst half of football of the season the second half started just in the same manner as Dungog gift-wrapped Gateshead field position.
They capitalised and suddenly it was a four point game.
That was as close as they game got as Dungog scored three second half tries to David Taylor, Brad Johnson and Fletcher Celand to eventually win running away.
Best for Dungog on the day were Chris Evans, in the backs, who had his way with his opposing number.
In the forwards it was Brad Johnson who took it upon himself to lead the side out of some disappointing sections in the match.
Also the bench for Dungog was particularly strong providing much needed enthusiasm whenever inserted into the game.
With the side now outright first on the ladder the team would like to thank all the supporters who have attended the games in the early part of the season and encourage other supporters to attend the game this Sunday at 2pm against Budgewoi.
This Dungog side looks capable of making a deep run this year if the young lads don’t get too carried away.
