The Dungog Warriors perfect start to the season ended on Saturday with an embarrassing 46-16 hiding at the hands of second place Dora Creek.
In wet and miserable conditions the warriors were totally outplayed and outmatched.
It appeared early that Dungog came to play, coming out of the blocks fast and scoring two early tries through Kieran Hinton and Brad Johnson to grab an early 10 nil lead.
A controversial no try ruling shortly after seemed to turn the game.
Dora Creek began to get the ascendency and took a 12-10 lead going into half time.
The second half wasn’t pretty as Dungog seemed to lose composure and began to turn the ball over on a regular basis.
Dora Creek was able to skip away and eventually the scoreline became embarrassing for Dungog as they let Dora Creek come marching through them constantly. Dungog could do nothing to stop them.
They were able to score the final try through Mark Johnston to stop the bleeding. The damage had been done and Dungog had suffered a 46-16 thrashing.
The side will have to regroup quickly if they want to maintain momentum through the middle part of the season.
Best for Dungog on the day were Kieran Hinton and Fletcher Celand in the forwards and Dave Henderson and Jared O’Neill, making his first appearance for Dungog in two years, were the best in the backs.
In further bad news for the team Lee Nevin was taken by ambulance to Wyong Hospital with a rib injury and will likely be sidelined for up to four weeks.
This injury is now added to the casualty ward which includes Luke Mellon who did significant damage to his ACL and will likely miss the rest of the season.
The team now returns home for three home games in a row.
They play Abermain this Sunday at 2pm.
The team is still on top of the table and needs the support of the town to regain form after this disappointing result.
RSL best forward and players’ player Kieran Hinton, RSL best back David Henderson and Ray’s Reserve Matt Hinton.
