Bowls carnival draws good competitors

23 Sep, 2009 05:00 AM
The weekend saw the September bowls carnival played at Dungog Bowling Club.

There were 26 teams of three players, a total of 156 players, along with family and friends. The club was near capacity full.

Organiser was Ken Russell along with Jim Merton and others.

The scoreboard was kept up by Lyn Merton who did a fantastic job and Mary Fisher gave a hand as well.

Players complimented Lyn on her new way of scoring using a computer and projector, all were able to see progressive scores straight way.

Prize money was put up by the club with Paul Byron donating as well.

Umpires were Jim Merton and Fred Longbotton on both days.

I cannot pick out any individual matches as they were all well played.

All of the teams said how they look forward to the carnival as they enjoy Dungog.

First place was M Brown trio with 5 wins plus 28.

Second placegetters were S Mearrick’s trio with 5 wins plus 16.

Third was John Lill’s group with 4 wins plus draw 21 and fourth was A White’s trio with 4 wins plus 26.

Terry Wilson’s group came fifth with 4 wins plus 25.

I can say I was sure that the team than didn’t have a win out of six games should have received something.

It was not through lack of trying, they were just not good enough on the two days.

In reality it was two days of really exhilarating bowls, with three games of 15 ends on Saturday with some finishing in the dark due to no lighting available.

Sunday saw three games of 12 ends played so it wasn’t an easy weekend.

I commend all bowlers for participating.

Prize winners were Grant Richards, Craig Lawrence, D Muir, B Golledge, Mei Restaurant and Riley Young.

To all the helpers for the preparation of both carpet and lawn greens, cooks, sandwich makers, barmaid Kristy Walters and our own secretary manager Ashley Wade, thank you all for a job well done.
