Single-figure handicap aim for young golfer

07 Dec, 2011 03:00 AM
It took a move to next to Dungog Golf Club for Alec Olsen to get serious about his game.

The 14-year-old has only been playing for nine months, but in that time has reduced his handicap from 32 to 23.

Normally men start off on 36 but his scores were so good, he started on 32.

“I started off playing in the Wednesday afternoon chook runs in January and won a few chooks,” Alec said.

“I then progressed to the Saturday competitions and have won three monthly medals.”

The junior went on to be runner up in the Cowdrey cup after being beaten in the final but won the 27-hole Walker Cup.

And he also won the C-grade net event on open day.

Alec was invited to play in the C-grade pennant competition at Maitland earlier in the year, and over the field, was third on countback.

One of the youngest in the competition, he was playing against senior golfers.

“I really enjoy playing and the older members of the [Dungog] club have helped me immensely,” Alec said.

“John Campbell has helped me and given me some tips and I really appreciate his help.

“I turn 15 in June next year and I hope to be [handicap] under 17 and from there, get down to single figures.”
