Golfers just miss final

07 Dec, 2011 03:00 AM
A local team has fallen agonisingly short of a crack at winning a national golf tournament held in Queensland.

Matt Dorney, Dean Lauder, Alan Thompson and Mark Lauder finished one shot and one spot outside the top 12 of the Holden Scramble Championship final at Twin Waters Golf Club.

A 10-under round on Saturday (November 26) had the four-man ambrose squad, featuring players from Paterson and Muree golf clubs, in 10th position but a round of seven-under on Sunday saw them slip back to 13th.

The top 12 teams from around the country contested the deciding round on Monday of last week.

“We were only 1.4 shots out of the top 12, which is only one putt,” Mark Lauder said.

“But it was great up there and we’ve had an absolute ball.”

Lauder said the team stole Hunter bragging rights after finishing ahead of Nelson Bay and Muswellbrook squads while rubbing shoulders with Australian golfers like John Senden, Stuart Appleby and Peter O’Malley.
