Team penning comes to the Lower Hunter

21 Dec, 2011 03:00 AM
The first team penning competition day was held at Gresford Showground on December 10.

Due to an overwhelming support of local competitors and property owners the

day was a great success.

Vice president Valley Team Penning Club Paul Hugginson thanked cattle donors Darcy Richards, Warren Richards and Tony Richardson and Richardson Bros Transport.

“First place in the open was taken out by a local team Janelle Osbourne, Geoff Burger and Lisa Barker with a time of 28 seconds for three head of cattle,” Mr Hugginson said.

“The junior competition was won by Merriwa team Cheraz Barker, Matty Porter and Gabrielle Ernst in a time of 114 seconds for three head of cattle.

“Thank you to Paterson Pony Club for catering on the day as well as all other sponsors who helped out with prizes and prize money.”

Valley team penning will be holding an event every month in 2012.

Team penning consist of three competitors riding in to an arena with 30 head of cattle with coloured collar around their neck.

When the judge calls out a colour you and your team have to find and muster the three head out of the mob with no other foreign colours.

They must muster them down to the other end of the arena and put all three in the pen under two minutes.

Fastest time wins the day.

“Most teams have four runs throughout the day and we cater for around 180 runs with prize money and prizes up for grabs up to fifth place in the open and in our junior comp,” Mr Hugginson said.
