One all draw for first game of season

28 Apr, 2010 05:00 AM
The Dungog under 18s soccer team started the 2010 season at home against Jesmond.

Coming into the match, Jesmond were overwhelming favourites having come second in the division above Dungog. The game started well for Dungog with plenty of opportunities being created.

Dominic Waters was unlucky not to have scored the team’s first goal for the season as his attempt at goal was ruled out for being offside.

Dungog continued to dismantle Jesmond with the opposition being overwhelmed by the powerful running of Ben Greig and Luke Murnain on the right and left wings with Ben hitting the cross-bar after a solo run.

Jesmond were held back in their half and just when they looked to break under the sustained pressure from Dungog, tragedy struck for the home team with Jesmond counter-attacking quickly and scoring from their first shot on goal.

Dungog having conceded were quite shocked to be behind on the score board however kept up the intensity which they took the game to Jesmond and it wasn’t long to they found themselves on the scoreboard also, with Dylan O’Sullivan finishing a long-range effort from 25 yards out.

The score going into half time was one all.

Dungog came out with fresh legs in the second half and continued the onslaught of Jesmond’s goal with countless shots and opportunities.

Michael Wenham and Tom Huckstadt continued to hassle the Jesmond defenders who would turn play back over to Dungog when they had the ball, whilst the Dungog backline of Matthew Jefferson, Micky Bennett, Mitch Sharp and Brad Steel held strong for the remainder of the match.

As the game wore on, the Jesmond players could be seen to become very frustrated and two of them were subsequently shown red cards for their behaviour.

Liam Manning, Rohan Mate and Joe Atkins controlled the midfield rather well through-out the entire match, disbursing the ball all over the park throughout the match.

TJ Hoch kept the opposition at bay in goals with a couple of fine saves at the end of match.

The final score finished at one all. Dungog can feel aggrieved that they did not finish ahead on the scoreboard after thoroughly dominating proceedings.

Dungog’s next game is away from home at Plattsburg at 2pm on Saturday.
