Twenty-eight years since it first started and the annual Glowalman Championships shows no sign of aging, with the junior campdraft, rodeo and sporting events attracting more competitors than ever.
The event, staged at Wingham, Nabiac and Gloucester, drew hundreds of horse enthusiasts from across the state, and two Western Australian competitors.
Committee member Kelvin Gregory said the annual competition was unique in horse riding circles.
“There’s nothing else like it in Australia, to have a week of competition,” he said.
“It’s family friendly, everybody gets in and helps, and we couldn’t do it without that help.”
Mr Gregory said this year, the event drew a large number of competitors from the North Coast, the Inverell and Glenn Innes districts as well as the Central Coast.
These competitors joined competitors from across the local district who spent the week camping at the three events and competing throughout the week.
Western Australian visitors Matt Davison and Chad Dudley who were competing in the Interstate Shield as part of an exchange program were impressed by the event.
“It’s been awesome,” they said.
Both said the hospitality shown by the organisers in providing horses, accommodation and support for their week long stay was incredible and both had enjoyed competing in the Glowalmans.
Matt had contested the campdraft events, Chad the saddle bronc and campdraft.
The Glowalman’s finished in Gloucester on Saturday with the sporting and campdraft events with 400 entries received for the campdrafting and 1500 individual runs taking place in the sporting events.
