Dungog under 9s soccer team had their biggest challenge this season when they took on their parents in a fun game last Saturday week at Dungog.
With determination and the threat of defeat from the very youthful opposition, the parents were looking concerned even before the game began.
Ellie and Millie Morris decided they were going to wear their dad, Richard, down and took him on with conviction. With Millie displaying some great manoeuvres to bamboozle the opposition and Ellie’s speed and endurance, Richard was certainly been dealt with toughly.
Ellie powered on through and scored a magnificent goal for her team.
With Stacey Bryon taking on the quiet approach and displaying good positioning and placement on the field, daughter Lucy kept up the pressure and snuck through to score a brilliant goal early in the game.
Abby Crowe was all over the field, ducking and weaving around the unsteady legs of the less flexible members of the adult team and set herself up for a number of close attempts at goal. With dad Grant arriving as an extra substitute for some weary adult players, Abby was still not deterred.
Jesse Griffith did a great job in goalie in the first half and when having a run up the field in the second half produced a great header and made his father, Brad, look a little lost on the field when he stole the ball off him countless times with some fancy footwork.
Stuart Hitchens played brilliantly in back position, once again, and was the saviour for his team with some huge kicks up the field. Mum, Sam, managed to keep up the pressure though and produced an amazing shot to score for her team. Dad Steve, courageously took on goalie for his team and managed to save many goals much to the disappointment of the determined under 9s.
With Tina Overton looking way too energetic to start with and sneakily placing herself quietly near her goal area to pull off a great goal, James, her son, came back with a vengeance to show how it was done with youthfulness and determination and placed himself brilliantly to score a fantastic goal for his team in the second half.
Georgia Stewart was quite vocal prior to the game that she was going to wear the oldies down and constantly displayed some determined tackles.
Mum Lisa, injured in the first half (and now not being able to wear her ballet outfit due to a nicely bruised leg), displayed some fancy foot work but was outshone by her daughter with some brilliant stops and clearances of the ball.
Dad Mark, stepping in briefly, dodging and weaving with the ball but did not impress the opposition.
Coach, Josh Long, starting as referee could not help himself when he gave up the whistle and bumped in to play with his team as their goalie.
Much to the excitement of his team players, Josh produced some amazing goal saves, flipping and turning the ball to prevent it from going in goal as the opposition desperately tried to steal some goals for their team.
With jokes of oxygen tanks requested for the side line, minor injuries and some being subbed for exhaustion not long into the game, the under 9s’ adults limped wearily from the field as their opposition skipped spritely off convinced that it was the best game they had played - EVER!
