Local juniors represent Hunter Valley

25 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
Five local junior cricketers were recently selected in Hunter Valley representative cricket teams.

Gresford’s Harry Boorer and Thomas Everett were picked in the under 13 and under 15 years respectively.

Dungog’s Dennis Van Rooyen was picked in the under 16s, Jordan Mitchell in under 14s and Karuah junior Mitchell Pinch in under 12s.

The age groups played at different areas around the state for four to five days from January 9.

The highlight of Thomas Everett’s week at Armidale was 38 runs and two wickets for 10 runs during the second game against Penrith.

Tom, who has been playing cricket for nine years and currently plays for the Gresford seniors, described his week away as “fantastic”.

“It was good playing with a different group of cricketers and the team atmosphere was great,” he said.

Harry Boorer’s spot in the team was wicket keeper and eighth and ninth batsman.

“We played a five-day carnival at Ballina and we won four of those games,” Harry said.

“On our first day we were beaten by Mid North Coast by only one run and three balls to spare.

“The next four games we won, beating Manly, Redland (Brisbane), South Metro (Brisbane) and Ballina.

“Our team came second in the pool and it was a fantastic experience for me in which I learned a lot from my coach Paul Park and my team mates.”

Harry has been playing cricket for seven years and is currently with Dungog under 14s.

Dennis Van Rooyen is not new to representative selection, with this his fourth year playing for Hunter Valley.

The under 16’s cricketer played at Taree with his father Dennis senior coaching the representative side.

“The team played well and it was a good experience to play on different wickets,” Dennis said.

“There were a lot of talented players in both our team and the teams were competed against.”

Dennis and his father both play for Hammers A-grade team in the Dungog competition.

Karuah cricketer Mitchell Pinch plays in the under 12s Maitland competition and headed to Lismore for the representative games.

The team played against South East Queensland, Parramatta, Manly, Illawarra and Hawkesbury over the five-day carnival.

While he has played in Dungog representatives teams in past seasons, this was his first time for Hunter Valley selection.

An all-rounder, Mitchell’s accumulated 72 runs over the carnival, with his highest tally being 30.

He also took three wickets.

“I really enjoyed the trip away, I had great team mates and it was good to play on different wickets,” he said.

Dungog’s Jordan Mitchell was selected in the under 14s Hunter Valley side, however due to more cricket commitments last week was unavailable for interview.
