Paterson’s Rigby Vane-Wood has achieved a 16-year-old cricketers dream and won the Bradman Cup.
He now gets to play at the SCG.
As a member of the Central Northern Zone team Rigby recently competed in the under 16s Country Cricket NSW Championships for the coveted Bradman Cup.
Hosted in 2012 by Southern Zone and held at venues around Shell Harbour on the NSW South Coast, the championships bring the state’s top under 16’s players together from the eight NSW Country Cricket Zones.
Central Northern players are selected from the Hunter Valley and Northern Inland representative teams.
Five boys from the Hunter were in the selection.
Central Northern had three successive wins defeating Northern Coastal, Riverina and Newcastle to win their pool and face off against the undefeated Illawarra in the final round.
Winning the toss and electing to bat Central Northern were two out for one run after three overs but fought back to be 8 for 198 in the 50 over innings.
Illawarra was defeated losing 10 wickets for 132 in the 47th over giving Central Northern their first win in the twenty years of the competition.
Rigby opened the bowling in each match and severely restricted his opposition’s ability to score runs.
In his 35 overs bowled he took three wickets and had eight maidens.
He also took three catches but was barely required to bat going in twice with only three balls to go.
As the winner of the Bradman Cup Central Northern now gets to contest the State Challenge against the winner of the metropolitan Sydney Green Shield competition.
That match will be held at the SCG in early February.
