Australia Day Sports Award winner Samantha Simmonds had a big decision to make last week.

She could attend the Australia Day ceremony in Dungog or compete with the Central Coast Marlins baseball team when they played in the Australian International competition in a five-day tournament in Sydney.

“I really wanted to be at the ceremony but I had been picked in the team before Christmas and didn’t want to let them down,” said Sam, 16.

“We eventually lost 10-5 in the final but were undefeated until then.

“I was very proud to win the Sports Award and disappointed I wasn’t there to receive it.”

Sam’s next big competition is the NSW Country baseball open women’s competition to be held over 10 days on the Gold Coast at Easter.
