Win for Dungog aged care worker

14 Sep, 2011 04:00 AM
Doreen Perrin was not only one of 32 finalists in the 2011 Hunter Aged Care Achievement Awards – she won the care staff of the year award.

Established in 2010, the Hunter Aged Care Achievement Awards aim to recognise everyday heroes currently working in the aged care industry in the Hunter region who shine in their commitment to providing excellence in care and show a passion for the older person as part of their everyday work.

The finalists come from a variety of aged care organisations operating in the Hunter region, and were selected from more than 100 nominees by an independent panel of aged care professionals.

Ms Perrin, a field care staff member, said she was “embarrassed and overwhelmed” when she found out she was nominated.

And she was “overwhelmed and surprised” when she won her category at the official presentation dinner at Noah’s on the Beach last Thursday night.

“I was up against people from big organisations and really didn’t think I had a chance,” Ms Perrin said.

“It is very good recognition for [Dungog and District] Neighbourcare and it proves small organisations are just as good as big ones.

“Our care is second to none and it’s good to be recognised.”

Ms Perrin was nominated by Community Aged Care Packages coordinator Yvonne Puse and client Agnes Turner.

Mrs Turner was “very excited” when she found out the news on Friday morning.

In her nomination she said Doreen was one of the people she has been involved with the most.

“I have known her for many years but now she is one of the carers for my husband who is 92-years-old.

“I have the privilege to see her regularly – what a Godsend she is to all us elderly who are fortunate to have her as a carer.

“She is so competent and loving in the manner she works and nothing is too much trouble.

“You would only have to see the smile on my husband’s face as she enters our home of a morning to know how welcome she is.”

Ms Perrin has been working for Dungog District Neighbourcare for five years but in the role of field care staff for two.
