Five years ago, and to coincide with the opening of the Rural Transaction Centre in Clarence Town, markets were started in Prince Street.
Helena Morris, who owns Clarence Town Licensed Post Office and is a member of the progress association, said the first market was in November 2005.
“We wanted to promote the town and thought it would be good leading up to Christmas,” Mrs Morris said.
“It went quite well and now it has grown so much.
“We have people coming from as far away as Gunnedah with stalls . . . and of course we have lots of local ones too.”
Prince Street is closed between Grey and Rifle Streets on the last Saturday of the month with an average of 30 to 35 stalls lining the street.
“But we’ve had up to 48 leading up to Christmas and it’s great,” Mrs Morris said.
“Local organisations sell local produce, the scouts have a sausage sizzle and there are a variety of other stalls with everything from ribbons and craft to a doll hospital.
“The Lions Club of Clarence Town has now taken over the running of the markets and it’s a bit of money for them too.”
