A Dungog businessman has labelled the request of Cr Peter Ainsworth for Mayor Glenn Wall to stand down as mayor as “un-Australian”.
Proprietor of Davey and Olsen Jim Olsen walked the main street of Dungog last Friday informing other business owners, ratepayers and customers of Cr Ainsworth’s motion.
Many also signed a petition in favour of Cr Wall which was presented to council on Monday morning.
“I feel that Cr Wall has always represented the council and ratepayers of Dungog Shire in a professional, competent manner and always with the interests of Dungog Shire at heart,” Mr Olsen said in the petition.
“I have been to meetings where Cr Wall has represented Dungog Shire and he has always done so with integrity and tried to get Dungog the best result he could.
“I hope all councillors will remember they are there to represent the ratepayers of Dungog on a whole and what is best for our town to progress and not fade away through lack of opportunity to grow.”
Minister for the Hunter Jodi McKay said Cr Wall has at all times fought for his community and has been a tireless advocate for additional services and resources for the Dungog Shire.
“Cr Wall has successfully lobbied the State Government for $2 million in funding for the shire's roads and for funding to attract new businesses opportunities for local businesses through the Dungog Business Investment Fund.
“This has already provided funding for $1.98 million in business expansion, creating 21 new jobs and retaining 10 existing jobs.
“Cr Wall also worked hard for the establishment of Dungog as an 'RV Friendly Town' and for the retention of Dungog's mental health worker.
“I understand the proposed Tillegra Dam remains a contentious issue in the community.
“Cr Wall has not pre-empted the outcome of the merit based planning assessment process which is currently underway and has worked to ensure his community benefits from the proposal in the lead up to the planning determination.
“As Minister for the Hunter, I have never been contacted by any other councillor seeking any form of assistance for the Dungog community.”
