New trees for Gresford

21 Jul, 2010 05:00 AM
Recent rain made it easier for the small band of workers who planted 100 trees in Gresford last week.

The project, initiated by the Gresford Community Group, has been more than 12 years in the planning.

The first of the pink crepe myrtles were planted on the footpath nature strip in Park Street and Durham Road.

Jane Chandler and Carolyn Addison were the driving force behind the project with funding for the project coming solely from the group.

“When the group was formed Clem Varley and myself went to lobby for Main Street funding from the government,” Mrs Addison said.

“Dungog won the funding and we can all admire the trees they planted with their money.

“There has never been a grant for this venture, and now all these years later, the group has made enough money to buy the trees for Gresford.”

Mrs Addison said Dungog Council provided two workers to help with the planting last Tuesday.

“We were really appreciative of their help,” she said.
