Councillor Peter Ainsworth wants Dungog Council to register its lack of confidence in fellow councillor Glenn Wall and request he step down as mayor.
Cr Ainsworth gave notice of the motion in council’s business paper with the matter to be discussed at last night’s meeting.
The motion stated that council register its lack of confidence in Cr Wall’s ability to adequately, appropriately and effectively represent council resolutions in relation to Tillegra Dam in the media and in deputations to local members of parliament, government ministers and members of the Opposition.
He also requested Cr Wall stand down as mayor and nominations be called for and voted on for re-filling the position immediately.
Cr Ainsworth said the motion is about confidence in relation to council resolutions.
He said he was not accusing the mayor of misbehaviour.
“In 2008 we had a firm resolution in place that officially Dungog Council does not support the proposed Tillegra Dam,” Cr Ainsworth said.
“I have had people say to me that the mayor has made statements regarding council which go against our resolution and as such, it appears council is supportive of the idea.
“I am not saying that the mayor is in favour, but it is coming across that way.
“Cr Wall has strong pushed the route access strategy for road funding and has done a great job but there are a multitude of other resolutions of council that don’t seem to be getting much airplay.”
Cr Wall spoke to the Chronicle on Friday morning saying he was very disappointed as he had given assurances in the past that if anyone wanted to put their hand up for the mayoral position at the September meeting, he wouldn’t contest it.
“The only had to wait two months and I would have stepped aside if someone else wanted the role,” he said.
“All this has done is created additional work for council.
“If they were concerned about my performance, it would have been better if they had come to me . . . it would have been a much better forum than at the council meeting.”
Cr Wall said he would justify his actions to anyone.
“I feel completely comfortable about how I have represented this community on any matters concerning the proposed dam,” he said.
“I believe this (motion) has come from two recent letters the general manager received regarding comments I have made to the media.
“This is quite evident as it follows on from Cr Joe Thompson’s ‘question without notice’ posed to me when I was absent from last months meeting attending the National General Assembly in Canberra”
“I have responded to these letters, with copies forwarded to all councillors and am happy to justify the statements I have made.
“Everything I have done has been to the best of my ability and I have represented the whole community in all my dealings with government ministers.”
Cr Wall has been “inundated” with good wishes since the business paper was made public late last week.
“All have been very supportive . . . and it has put me in a very uncomfortable position.
“It is something you don’t expect and I am extremely grateful but overwhelmed by all the support.
“I will stand for council again at the next election – as long as the community wants me.”
