Following the successful GP Stakes event at the end of February this year, and the great fun of the event, a number of groups have expressed interest in holding another such event next year.
The process has some real credibility now, having achieved its objective of recruiting a new lady doctor for the Dungog Shire.
Approval has also been given for the bulk of the remaining funds to equip rooms in Clarence Town for use as a consulting surgery which could re-establish a presence lost two years ago when several doctors retired.
Dungog Shire GP Stakes chairman Kim Wright said after considerable thought and discussion it has been agreed that the fun sports day be held in early 2012 to raise $20,000 to be kept in trust by the Dungog Shire Council to upgrade the James Theatre by both direct use of the funds and/or use of the funds as leverage to obtain matching grant funds from both State and Federal Governments if appropriate.
“We are all aware of the current position regarding the James Theatre,” Mr Wright said.
“This is an important cultural and recreational facility in the shire, and is the principal venue for the Dungog Film Festival, now widely regarded as one of the important events each year in the Hunter Valley.
“Appropriate upgrading is also likely to attract new operators for showing films again on a regular basis.
“It is hoped that the event will attract even more teams than last year.”
Entry sponsorship has been reduced to $500 per team – it was $1000 per team for the GP Stakes.
The number and type of events is still being decided, but will be similar to those of February 2011.
It is also hoped to shorten the day so that finish is about 4.30 – 5.00pm.
A nomination and information pack will be available soon, so interested parties should keep an eye out for this.
All groups involved last year will be circulated by email and more information will be available from members of the organising committee, chair Kim Wright, Anne McDonald, Michael Atkins, Ivan Skaines and Lisa Connors.
