Facelift continues for showground's grand old dame

Dungog Council has agreed to allocate $15,000 towards the continued refurbishment of the town’s iconic grandstand.

Cr Glenn Wall, who attends the showground management committee meetings as an observer, is passionate about the future of the building, which was built in 1927.

“The amount of work the management committee has done on the ground and the building is phenomenal,” Cr Wall said.

“It’s people like Des Hopson and Owen Nicholson who have worked tirelessly on the building to get it where it is today.

“The management committee currently has $12,000 in the grandstand account and recently applied for $5000 for the project from the Foundation for Regional and Renewal Grant and $16,500 from the Community Builders Partnership Grant.

“If all the above grants are successful then the total funds available will be $33,550.”

The management committee can now apply for additional funding from the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation and the project can be completed.”

Remaining to be completed is concrete works for disabled access into the dining and hall area ($9000), refurbish dining area and kitchen facilities including floor coverings, plumbing and electrical works ($47,000) and painting of the grandstand ($22,395).

Showground committee president Charles Watson said the building had been re-clad, damage by termites rectified and new structural beams replaced at both ends.

“We are now looking at preserving the timber and completing the work in the kitchen and dining area,” Mr Watson said.

“The work to date has been done through grants, user fees and donations from user groups and a fair amount of work by the management committee.

“So far the work carried out is first class and we want to continue in the same vane.”

The annual show, rodeo and two motorcycle events are held annually at the showground and it is hoped the completion of the grandstand will attract more events to the historical ground.
