The history of Dungog’s early years has been woven into a quilt and presented to Dungog Historical Museum.
The quilt was made by Dungog-Clarence Town CWA member Marie Gainsford and recently presented to historical society members by the organisation.
Finished just prior to the Dungog Railway Centenary, the quilt was part of the Quiltarama display by CWA members for the weekend of celebrations.
This is the largest one done by Mrs Gainsford and includes 48 historical photos.
“This is my fifth quilt made on behalf of the organisation,” she said.
“The first one I made was of historical buildings of Clarence Town, followed by a CWA group quilt which featured all the branches of the Hunter River Group.
“I then made a famous Australian women quilt and then one featuring all the members.
“At the same time I was making the early years one I also did one to celebrate the centenary of rail.
“I vowed these were going to be my last ones, but I think I need to do famous men of Australia.”
Mrs Gainsford’s brother Stephen Colley scans the photos onto fabric and adds the writing.
“It takes about an hour from start to finish for each photo,” Mrs Gainsford said.
The photos of the historical buildings were supplied by the historical society.
They include Barrington Guest House, the building of Chichester Dam, different hotels, churches, factories and historical buildings in the Dungog area.
The railway and early years quilts were the CWA’s major projects for 2011 and will both be hung in the museum.
