Dungog Country Women’s Association (CWA) has donated $1600 to Lara Aged Care to purchase a palliative care mattress.
Each year the organisation has a major fundraiser and this year decided to assist the aged care facility.
President Marilyn Flannery said the money was raised through their Wagga quilt exhibition and a poets’ day in September.
“Our former president the late Betty Ewin wanted the money to go to Lara, so we wanted to fulfill her plan,” Mrs Flannery said.
“We asked Lara manager Kerri Wagner what they would like and she mentioned the special mattress.”
Ms Wagner said the mattress is an inflatable air mattress that goes on top of the normal one.
“It pulsates, adjusting the air flow which helps prevent pressure sores for high care patients.
“We currently have four and this makes it five.
“Sometimes family members have bought them, but this extra one will be a great help.
“It will enable us to use our money on other things.”
Ms Wagner said the facility wants to provide the best care possible for the residents.
“This mattress also makes it easier for staff as they don’t have to turn the patients as often.
“And this is good for arthritic patients who would normally experience pain when being moved.”
