Dungog Council will ask the Department of Education to fund the installation of a children’s crossing at Glen William School.
Council received a request from the school’s P & C Association and school administration manager for a school crossing.
In their letter to council they outlined their grave concerns of “the probability of a serious incident will occur without the installation of such a crossing to ensure the safety of the children”.
“Glen William Road is a meandering country road that has become increasingly busy over recent times, and although signage indicating a change in speed limit from 80kp/h to 40kp/h is situated a few yards before and beyond our school, we fear this is grossly inadequate and would be much more successful with the addition of a children’s crossing,” they said in their letter to council.
At an inspection by the traffic and road safety committee on June 2 the Roads and Traffic Authority inspector pointed out that the school entered into an agreement in 2008 that parents would park directly opposite the school and walk their children over to the school and reverse that procedure when picking the children up.
“If a school crossing was provided parking directly opposite the school would not be available and kerb and gutter would have to be provided on the opposite side of the school,” the RTA inspector said.
Dungog Council has said they do not have the funds to provide the kerb and gutter which would also include shoulder sealing at the school to accommodate the crossing.
