Colleen was nominated by Dungog and District Neighbourcare transport coordinator Debra Redman and was one of six finalists chosen from 130 community transport organisations in New South Wales.

The Dungog resident, who has been volunteering for Neighbourcare for over 10 years, was unaware she had been nominated.

“I thought I was just invited to the dinner and I was gobsmacked when my name was announced as the winner,” Colleen said.

“I got into volunteering by Maxine Saxby who told me all about it.

“She was also a volunteer and said it was great to help people.

“I like dealing with the elderly, they have so many stories to tell about the past and what it was like growing up.

“It is very rewarding and I’ve made some wonderful friends along the way.

“I knew a lot of people around the area but had never talked to them. Now I get to drive them to different appointments.

“The only downside is when they pass away as you get to know them very well.

“To get this award is just the greatest thing for me.”
