 Chooks rule the roost

Chooks rule the roost

28 Sep, 2011 04:00 AM
Two Isa Browns and a bantam now have a luxurious home at Dungog Public School thanks to the school’s general assistant Neville Webb.

Mr Webb built the chook pen at the school out of recycled materials to give children at the school the chance to learn how to look after the birds.

“It’s totally waterproof, we’ve had a bit of good rain and hit hasn’t leaked yet,” he said.

“It’s also snake proof and vermin proof.

“It’s all made out of recycled material except for the mesh over it.”

The pen is at the back of the school with the vegie patch and principal Steven Richard is hoping to eventually connect it to the outdoor classroom.

“We want to build steps over or a tunnel under the walkway to make it easier to get here,” he said.

While the pen is only home to three chickens at present, Mr Richard said eventually there will be more and the students won’t have any trouble with the extras.

“They’ll be the best fed chooks in the world,” he said.
