Despite the cool overcast day on Saturday and the postponement of the campdraft portion of the event, the 2011 Gresford Rodeo managed to record the second highest gate take ever recorded.
Secretary Rosemary Wall said the constant threat of showers was around all day but the crowds just kept rolling in.
“We thought our luck had run out when it started to rain in the afternoon but instead of a mass exodus of spectators, we got a mass display of umbrellas all the way around the arena as our spectators refused to give up their viewing spots,” Mrs Wall said.
“Thankfully the shower was short lived and it was business as usual.
“Both the junior rodeo on Friday night and the main rodeo on Saturday ran like clockwork under the guidance and expertise of rodeo director Ashley Litchfield and his band of volunteer helpers.
“The junior rodeo was host to 145 individual competitor performances and the main event on Saturday was also well supported with 362 individual performances throughout the day.
“The Richardson brothers stole the show with Eric placing second in the junior steer on a score of 73, Tim taking out first place in the open bareback with a score of 79 and Clifton winning the open bull ride with a score of 85.
“Not content to let the local boys have all the glory, Jessica Litchfield placed third in the juvenile barrel race completing the course in 16.44 seconds which was only 0.89 of a second behind the winner.”
The campdraft portion of the event has been rescheduled for September 24 and 25 when, hopefully, iit will be dry enough for organisers to get the cattle out of their respective properties and into the showground for the competition.
“As usual when the profits from this weekend and the September campdraft are tallied up we will be donating 60 per cent of the proceeds to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter,” Mrs Wall said.
“St Mary-on Allyn-Heritage Restoration Fund is our local charity recipient for 2011 and they will receive 5 per cent of our profit.”
