It was only fitting that Sybil Kerr was given the job of officially opening the new hall in Ironwood Village last week.
Sybil’s late husband John, along with Ken Shelton, was the driving force in having the retirement village constructed in Mackay Street, Dungog, 15 years ago.
Chairman of Lara Aged Care Ray Neilson said a proposal to build a retirement village was discussed in the early ‘90s.
“We put a proposal forward but it was too much money,” Mr Neilson said.
“John and Ken pestered me to get the price down . . . they were the driving force behind it.
“The first five units were built on the western side and the other eight came later.
“We have been looking to build a small room for the residents to use and decided to build it in the backyard of the house.
“I am grateful it has come up so well.
“John and Sybil were the first couple to move in and it is only fitting that Sybil is given the job of cutting the ribbon.”
The hall contains kitchen facilities, furniture and a television for the village residents to enjoy.
