There were record entries for this year’s Dungog – Gresford Hoof & Hook competition held on the weekend.
More than 100 head of cattle competed in the 10 classes which suited all live weights from 300kg to 451kg and over.
President of the organisation John Collison said entries were up on last year.
“Following and excellent season they were also of very good quality,” he said.
In 1984 a meeting was held between Bede Johnson, Rober Flannery, Keith Lober (deceased), Bob Robson (deceased) and Denny Long (deceased) who were all committee members of the Dungog A & H Association stud beef cattle section.
Mr Flannery said the aim of the meeting was to discuss the merits in holding a hoof and hook competition.
“The then Department of Agriculture beef cattle officer Ian Blackwood was approached to assist and give advice on the subject,” Mr Flannery said.
“Gresford Show Society was invited to become involved along with the Dungog A & H Association.
“A committee was formed and named the Dungog-Gresford Hoof & Hook with Bede Johnson appointed inaugural chairman.
“The first competition was held on April 17 and 18, 1985 at Dungog saleyards and Maitland Abattoir.
“The 2010 competition, which coincidently was held on the same dates, is the 16th competition.”
Competitions were held from 1985-1990.
No competition was held in 1991 and 1992 due to the drought.
Competitions commenced in 1993 through to 1999 and then from 2008 till this year.
The presentation dinner will be held on Friday night when all championships and prizes will be presented.
Results will be published in a later edition of the Chronicle.
