Barnaby's defence of 'Phoney Tony' didn't help

POOR Tony Abbott. Here he was trying to defend his honesty by confessing he sometimes didn't tell the truth, when who should come bustling into the confusion but Barnaby Joyce.

''What someone might say to their lover in the heat of passion is entirely different, or should be entirely different, to what you say to the lady checking out your groceries at the supermarket,'' said Joyce.

It didn't seem helpful. ''Of course I'll love you in the morning'' doesn't automatically equate with ''No cash out, thanks''. Unless Joyce and Abbott, who were both schooled by the Jesuits, know something about Jesuitical logic that we don't.

What was Joyce saying? That Tony Abbott couldn't lie straight in or out of bed? Abbott's Labor opponents thought it would be useful to suggest just that.

Hardly had the closing credits on Monday night's 7.30 Report spooled across the nation's screens before the ALP was cranking out a YouTube attack video headlined ''Tony Abbott - You can't trust anything he says''.

''The next time Tony Abbott says anything, ask yourself is he telling the truth,'' invites the voice-over. ''By his own admission, he is probably lying.''

By mid-morning, the entire nation seemed to be arguing with itself over Abbott's admission that he didn't always tell the gospel truth unless it was prepared and scripted.

The airwaves were shrilling with talkback callers who variously expounded that Abbott was stating the obvious about politicians, was a mendacious fraud, had blown his career to smithereens or was proving a breath of fresh air in a fetid swamp. Bloggers were furiously pounding out their positions, Twitter was alive with the debate and it was standing room only at office water-bubblers.

Labor MPs and staffers sweated over a cut-through phrase that would cause ruination to Abbott's reputation, settling on ''Phoney Tony''.

Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese took the courageous step of proclaiming that ''I have never consciously said something that was wrong and every time I speak I try to tell the absolute truth''. Albanese, a lifelong warrior in the New South Wales Labor factional wars, was clearly superior to fellow ALP Sydneysider and former senator Graham Richardson, whose literary account of Labor politics, Whatever It Takes, includes the immortal lines: ''You have to lie to keep your job. If you have to lie, it is probably a good system.''

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, possibly relieved that, suddenly, no one was accusing him of abandoning his principles, remained sanguine. It was a matter for Abbott to explain what he meant, said the PM. Liberal staffers obligingly pumped out a 50-page dossier headed ''The Rudd Government's Broken Promises''

It was bad enough with Tony Abbott comitting the ultimate Mea-Culpa when Kerry O'Brien calmly put him to the sword after he had his ears checked to confirm he was hearing a Scripted response of weasel words from the alternative PM of Australia. Then, just to add to the insult..along comes Barnaby Joyce..shadow finance and water and resources spokesman and with his added rider of interplanetary exploration and calmly puts his thumb in his ear which makes it the first Australian digit in space and in perfect Gibberish espouses the virtues of the porkies you would tell your mistress in comparison to what you would swarmy when you are checking out the gal at the counter..strewth..and this lot is the alternative..now..about that Drovers Dog..hehehehehe

Tony Abbott confirmed that he was incapable of thinking for himself, lacking initiative, and without a script he'll be at a loss to figure out what to do in an emergency.

Tony Abbott says it as it is. He doesn't use a lot of jargon like Rudd who in the end says nothing. Rudd manages to con the public and they don't even know it. He'd make a great second hand car salesman

The Liberal Party would have done better to keep Malcolm Turnbull at the held. Tony Abbott's foot is constantly looking for his mouth.

Are we supposed to take these politicians seriously? When can we expect the next `sitcom' instalment?

This is so deja vu! We had core & non-core promises from Mr Howard, who saw fit to gag Mr Abbott after so many inept "blurts" in the past. The Howard cabinet viewed Abbott's media bombs as predictable disasters. So the man is still "blurting". Does he not think at all before he speaks? Is he afflicted with microphone mania, (presence of microphone causes suspension of cognitive function), camera chaos, ditto, ? or does he think, but the calibre of thought & judgement is sadly lacking? So we have gospel & non-gospel? I do not want as leader of my country a man whose tongue is in such a wet place where it slips so often. Imagine him having a blurt in international fora. I'll make a core promise, in writing, after careful thought, as my considered position. I will not vote for Mr Abbott or any of the turkeys who were silly enough to think he could be a leader. And a footnote - is Barnaby talking theory or prac when he mentions conversations with a lover? Is he some sort of authority in this field? How do these pollies , if they are actually getting ready for government, have the time to ride bikes for days, or bleat about pillow talk with lovers?

True, Barnaby, you should be saying different things to different women in different circumstances, but surely you would still be telling the truth to both women???
