A buck that has a lot of ground to cover

A buck that has a lot of ground to cover

THE buck’s still going to stop with Kevin. Just not yet.

It’s got a lot of ground to cover before it comes to rest, that old buck.

And it’s already had a busy two years.

It’s been up hill and down dale.

When this whole thing began – with Kevin07 two years ago, as a weary nation eyed its ageing prime minister and toyed with the idea of turfing him in favour of the nerdy young challenger – there wasn’t much doubt about where the buck belonged.

It belonged with the old guy – with John Howard who, as Kevin told us, had neglected the task of reform for far too long.

And it spent some time surfing, cursing and beating up on Bernie Banton with Tony Abbott, too, the last of the Howard health ministers and the one who was obliged to buy that little hospital in Tasmania, just to make Howard’s point.

"I’m committed to ending the buck-passing on health between Canberra and the states," Kevin07 told voters in a TV advertisement on health, to the reassuring accompaniment of an acoustic guitar.

"I’ll work co-operatively with the states to get our hospitals fixed, but in the end, the buck will stop with me."

When Kevin07 was elected, though – that’s when the buck started on its giddy travels.

And it’s kept some low company, let me tell you.

It’s hung out with Nathan and the rest of the premiers out the back of COAG, cadging cigarettes from passers-by, seriously on the grift for stimulus money from the feds.

It’s hung around the emergency room at Royal North Shore Hospital for hours on end among the drunks and chronics, among the barking babies and sad-eyed mothers, triaged to the end of the queue by strung-out staff.

Don’t get me wrong: the buck’s had a bit of fancy, too.

It’s spent some time in Point Piper with the Turnbulls, taking a rest poolside and enjoying some canapes while Kevin zooms around getting his plebiscite in order.

It’s been back to the Howards’ place for a quick sherry, too, a couple of times in the past 20 months or so.

But there was a violent and unexpected mugging late last year, and the buck was unexpectedly taken hostage by a giant brute of a foreigner: the global financial crisis, which still has the poor bugger in its grasp.

Kevin hasn’t given up on the buck.

It’s still going to stop with him in the end, he said yesterday – all that’s left to do is a quick round of public consultation, a deep but temporary direct engagement with industry stakeholders, one more premiers conference, then another one and then we’ll have made it to the drawing board stage for a plebiscite, depending on global conditions.

Beaten, exhausted, drunk and sporting a strange unexplained tattoo, the buck might then find its way home to Kevin’s.

It’s already been a hell of a buck’s night.

And the night is yet young.

As Annabelle makes a comic strip out of serious journalism in vague terms that waft into the mostly hot air of 'bucks that cushion', 'bucks that remain borrowed', 'bucks that are wasted', 'bucks that fly Premiers to pass small gift cheques', ' bucks to stimulate-then nonstimulate', 'bucks that are billions in conservative spending', 'bucks that are about to be reigned in by medicare taxes, fuel excise, grocery rises and the Juggle Act- the Interest Rate circus rodeo','bucks that will keep Kevin07 from becoming Kevin Bond 007' - the grim reaper of the 'Laboured buck party. 'Borrowed bucks gone','$22billion bucks in the bank-gone'. If any deserved a 'conservative' then we got a 'pass the buck man'. If 'the States won't give up 'their bucks' then time to make 'War within Labour Party' and 'pass the buck' onto the people "If we want real health reform"bucks you have to pay. First Hospital round from Dr Buck at Nth Shore is in a blue ribbon Liberal seat where 'buck the magic dragon' heals the system and they all said "Bucks for All", "Bucks for Burns inventory, please, Dr Buck" or never say to PM- a special visitor, to simply buck off, Mr Bucket (or is it Bouquet?)".
